Renting an Apartment

Some self-explainitory things:

  • Pay your bills on time! (see more in credit section)

  • Don't damage your apartment, for costs are usually high

  • Be responsible and neighborly in your apartment

Here are some hidden fees that you should be aware of:

  • Credit Checks: Most apartments do background checks and credit checks. They do this to see if they want to lease you the apartment, and to see how responsible you will be with paying your bills. This is usually around $50

  • Leases: Most landlords have you commit to a lease that is about 6 months to 2 years long. After commiting to a length of time, they usually ask for the first and last months' rents. They ask for the last month's rent because it assures them that you won't leave without paying for the end of your lease.

  • Security Deposit: Some landlords will also ask for a security deposit equal to a month's rent. This deposit ensures that you will leave the apartment as you found it. If you leave the apartment undamaged, you should get this deposit back when you move out.

  • Movers' Fees: These are your fees that you pay the movers for moving anything you wanted to the apartment. Most of these fees are depend on the distance you're moving and the weight of your objects.  We cannot accurately estimate these costs for you, but most movers have a free estimator on their website!
